In order to survive in today's competitive global market, organizations must actively manage all types of risks, including occupational health and safety issues. ISO 45001 issued by the international organization for Standardization (ISO) in March 2018 marks an important step in improving occupational health and safety standards worldwide. The new standard can enable organizations to take the initiative to improve injury prevention and reduce health damage, so that organizations can survive for a long time.
Due to the increasing globalization and Global trade, organizational stakeholders hope that the organization has ethical performance in all aspects of its business, especially in the way it treats its employees. ISO 45001 will provide these organizations with an internationally recognized occupational health and safety standard to follow. This standard not only provides a formal system specification for analyzing and managing risks, but also provides a specification for managing compliance with regulations, improving workplace safety and evaluating occupational health and safety performance. These systematic methods are beneficial to reduce the number of accidents and ultimately the commercial threat.
In order to meet international needs and requirements, more than 50 countries and organizations, including the International Labor Organization (ILO), have participated in iso45001 related work. The goal is to provide a tool that can be used by organizations, any industry, and the world.
ISO 45001 replaced the OHSAS 18001 standard which was first issued in 1999 and revised in 2007, and became the main international standard of OHSAS management system.
At present, organizations with OHSAS 18001 certification have a three-year transition time for recertification to meet the requirements of ISO 45001 standard.
